Daylight Savings Time
Here’s what I dislike the most, it’s dark when I go to work and it’s dark when I get home! No, I don’t live in Alaska but sometimes it feels like it. Also what are we saving this daylight for? And when do I get to use it?
How Does Daylight Savings Time Impact Your Health?
What about your health can a small 60 minute change have an impact? Yes it can really mess with your circadian rhythms (the same way jet lag does). Babies might be more grumpy….for that matter old people might be more grumpy too.
Some people report suffering from more headaches around daylight savings time. And in the spring studies show a 24% increase in heart attacks during the week of time change however for those who make it to fall will enjoy a 21% decrease during time change week. You may also feel a bit more tired than normal!
Tips to Improve Your Sleep During Time Change
Try these tips to minimize the impact of time change:
- Establish and stick to your bedtime
- Do something relaxing before bed (like reading a book, taking a bath, having a cup of decaffeinated tea, or meditating)
- Limit caffeine after 12 pm
- Exercise during the day
- If you nap during the day keep it under 20 minutes
- Limit screen time at night
- Keep your bedroom dark at night and light in the morning
