Is Your Protein Shake Making you Sick?

 What’s in Your Protein Shake?

You want to be healthy and you know supplementing protein (among other things) is good for your health. But which one should you select? They all look healthy but are they? You might be surprised to discover ingredients hiding in some very popular protein powders that may be making you sick!

Carageenan

protein shake ingredientsOne of the most shocking and dangerous ingredients you may find in your protein powder and health food is carageenan. Carageenan comes from red seaweed and is used in products like protein powders, yogurts and almond milk as a thickening agent. Unfortunately, numerous studies have shown a link between Carageenan, inflammation, diabetes and cancer!

The National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) recommended removing carageenan from the approved ingredients list however USDA secretary Sonny Perdue was swayed by powerful agribusiness lobbyists and overruled the NOSB. While most companies have voluntarily removed carageenan from their products some have not. Even if your Protein Shake or smoothie says it’s organic it may contain this dangerous ingredient.

Animal studies have repeatedly shown that food-grade carrageenan causes gastrointestinal inflammation and higher rates of intestinal lesions, ulcerations, and even malignant tumors. – Carageenan Report 2016

Banned in Europe

When it comes to producing safer health products we could take a lesson from the Europeans who have already banned carageenan and thousands of other questionable ingredients. Ingredients the US government still allows in our food. Is it any wonder our country is one of the most overfed and yet malnourished in the world?

Protect Yourself

It’s disappointing that something promoted as healthy can contain harmful ingredients. Unfortunately, you can’t depend on the government or (so called health companies) to protect you, it’s  up to you to investigate, and be a label detective for your family. As you can see, even if it says “Organic” it doesn’t mean it’s safe so you really need to look more closely and do your homework. Another good strategy is to look for products formulated to the higher European standard.

Take a look at your protein shake and nut milk. If you see Carageenan on the label you’ll want to look for an alternative. Reach out, I’d be glad to share some carageenan alternatives my family and I have switched to.
